Grant M. Aulenbach of Mohnton, passed away on December 3, with his wife Rita, by his side. Grant had just celebrated his 87th birthday.
He was the son of the late Arthur and Irene (Sherman) Aulenbach. Growing up on Angora Road, Grant attended Mt. Penn HS and graduated in 1953.
Following service in the Marine Corps, Grant began working in the Research Department at Car Tech and completed his working years as a Method’s Engineer and later a General Foreman in the Strip Finishing Department. While there, he was awarded several patents.
Grant led a full life. Fishing was his favorite pastime and he fished regularly in Canada, Mexico, Key West, and parts of Central and South America. He also traveled to Germany for Oktoberfest with his friends. When he traveled, his storytelling attracted new friends from all over and they became lifelong relationships.
Grant enjoyed research and had eclectic interests. He had in-depth knowledge about many diverse topics. Music, sports, history, cooking, gardening, fishing, birdwatching, technology, and any topic that came up that he could add to the conversation. He was truly a lifelong learner.
In his younger years, he shared his interests with his family. They went on many camping trips where fishing and exploring parts of the country and added richness to their children’s lives. Grant’s family meant the world to him. He had gone to great lengths to make sure they had whatever they needed.
After retiring, Grant was active in the Mohnton Lions Club and developed many more friends there. At this time, he started to become passionate about politics and was always willing to debate the issues. Even while battling liver cancer for the past three years, Grant continued to explore new ideas, experiment with new recipes, adapt to changing technology, and lead a productive life.
Grant is predeceased by his first wife, Hazel Majer; son, Brett husband of Bunny Aulenbach; daughter, Renee wife of Tim Tobias.
Surviving is his wife, Rita Tomashitis; brother, Neil husband of Ann Aulenbach, FL.: daughter, Rhonda, wife of Randy Readshaw, Carlisle, PA.; six grandchildren: Matt and Ben Tobias, Sarah and Abby Aulenbach, and Joshua and Andrea Readshaw.
He is also survived by four great grandchildren as well as two nephews and a niece and many cousins.
Respecting Grant’s wishes, services will be private. Donations made be made to the Cancer Society, the Animal Rescue League, or the Helping Harvest Food Bank.
